Aging and Frailty in terms of Self-Body Relations from the Phenomenological Perspective
Kang Myoung-Sheen
Abstract
The concept of frailty might be located between the concept of the normality and the concept of disease in old age. This intuition has been philosophically considered in this research. A discussion of phenomenological sociology brought some awareness to the problem, and a discussion of phenomenological philosophy of medicine brought a clue leading to a conceptual solution. Sally Gadow's discussion of the self-body relations in health and illness experiences from the phenomenological perspective is appropriate for the purpose of this research. Aging occurs within the aging process, and also a theoretical possibility to conceptualize it as such is in the phenomenology of health and disease. If the concept of clinical medicine and actual clinical management are grounded on this premise, some progress in the current theoretical situation surrounding the concept of frailty is expected.
